Portrait of Pedro Robalo

The short version

Before moving into software, I worked as a Registered Nurse, first across several clinical specialties and later in intensive care. Healthcare taught me to keep calm, pay attention to the details, and take every failure seriously when real people are on the other side.

In 2021, I swapped nursing for test automation. Since then, I’ve worked across telecoms, industrial software, and fintech, testing web and mobile products as well as set-top boxes.

Today at Uphold, I work on automation and quality across both the web and mobile experience and products for businesses and partners. These include Ascent for institutional trading, the Enterprise API, the Partner Portal, and Topper, an on/off-ramp for apps and self-custodial wallets that Phantom uses as a way to buy crypto. Day to day, I use Cypress, Detox, JavaScript, and GraphQL to cover critical journeys, catch edge cases, and give the team fast, useful test feedback.

More recently, I’ve focused on building reusable agent skills and workflows for the Test Automation and QA teams. They were designed to integrate with Claude Code and GitHub Copilot, while remaining usable with other agents too. That has helped speed up test creation and make existing tests easier to maintain, but the more important gain is giving the people who know the application best the confidence to contribute directly to automation without losing the team’s development standards.

I’ve also worked on making test results easier to analyse, so feedback arrives sooner and is more useful. The goal is simple: give QA the infrastructure and confidence to approve changes and new features, with automated tests as one of the foundations for shipping quickly and safely.

This Portfolio brings together a few projects and ideas I’m happy to share. It is not meant to cover everything I’ve done. That is what the résumé is for.

  • Nursing, Escola Superior de Saúde Ribeiro Sanches (2012–2016)

How I like to work

  • Start with risk, then choose the tools
  • Keep unit checks close to the code and end-to-end tests focused on journeys that matter
  • Make CI answer a simple question: “is it safe to ship?”
  • Build reusable agent skills and workflows for Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, and other agents without losing engineering standards
  • Make test results easier to analyse, so feedback is quick to understand and act on
  • JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Playwright, Cypress, Detox, Appium, Selenium, and GraphQL
  • Treat accessibility, semantics, and testability as part of the build

Healthcare taught me that small misses can affect real people. I try to bring that same care to software without making the process heavier than it needs to be.
